Semi-truck driver faces charges after U.S. 12 crash in Niles

Posted on Apr 27, 2009

Police say a semi-truck driver couldn’t stop in time while driving on U.S. 12 in Michigan Saturday night, leading to a chain-reaction crash involving four vehicles.

The Berrien County Sheriff’s Department said the 7:35 p.m. accident happened when Thomas Tyszka, 26, of Marcellus, approached the South Third Street intersection while heading eastbound and hit a pickup driven by Jon Thompson, 47, of Edwardsburg.

Thompson’s eastbound vehicle then crashed into a Jeep being driven by 47-year-old Todd Tighe of Cassopolis.

The eastbound Tighe then hit Michael Newcomer, a Niles 17-year-old who was headed north on South Third Street.

Thompson, Tighe and Tighe’s passenger were all taken to the hospital and treated for minor injuries, authorities said.

Tyszka was cited for failing to stop and held on an outstanding warrant issued by Cass County. The Sheriff’s Department also said Tyszka faces charges for narcotics possession after drugs were found at the scene.
