Snowmobile, Tractor Crash Kills Dorr Township Man

William Thomas Schurtz, 49, was killed Saturday, Jan. 10, 2009, when his snowmobile collided with a tractor on 20th Street.

Schurtz was riding his snowmobile on 20th Street near 136th Avenue at about 10:40 p.m. The Allegan County Sheriff Department deputies arrived and found Schurtz trapped under the tractor. The operator of the tractor, a 75-year-old Dorr Township man, was plowing snow and backed into the road.

Schurtz was pronounced dead at the scene.

A second snowmobile following Schurtz apparently also hit the tractor, throwing its operator, a 38-year-old Dorr Township woman, and its passenger, a 28-year-old Dorr Township man, off the machine. Neither were injured, nor was the driver of the tractor.

The crash remains under investigation.
