Social Security Disability Insurance Filings Increase During Economic Crisis

Posted on Aug 09, 2009

The Associated Press reports from Washington that Social Security disability claims are expected to continue their current surge - not only because of the struggling economy but because the aging generation of baby boomers will need increasing support for their growing medical problems.

Just last year, the Social Security Administration estimated that 3 million new Social Security Disability Insurance benefits claims would pour in during 2009, but already they have increased their estimate to 3.3 million.

This increase in disability claims and payments won't just put a financial strain on the government agency - it is expected to worsen the current backlog of disability claim applications and disability application appeals. Right now a number of states are reporting backlogs of hundreds and even thousands of disability cases - and processing times that can stretch beyond three years. In some cases, those with disabilities are dying before they receive SSA disability support.

Currently 736,000 people are waiting in limbo about their social security disability claim - many of whom cannot work, have expensive medical needs, who and do not have a steady income. This number is up from 556,000 disabled people waiting for social security benefits eight months ago - a 30 percent change.

The problem is being exacerbated by the fact that many states are furloughing employees to deal with recent budget cuts, causing the lag in disability application processing and the general backlog in paperwork. Michigan is among the many states that have furloughed employees even in this time of need for case reviewers.
