Southern Illinois Boy Killed In Johnston City Dog Attack

Posted on Jul 08, 2009

Many people think that most deadly dog attacks involve strays or strange dogs - but often times dog bite victims are attacked by their own pets. This was the case in Johnston City in Williamson County, Illinois, where a three-year-old boy was mauled to death by three family pets in his own back yard in June.

According to Southern Illinois police officials, the toddler, Gabrial Reese Mandrell, pushed the screen out of his bedroom window and entered his backyard, where two pit bull mixes and a collie mix were kept. At around eight in the evening, family members found Mandrell wounded in the back yard and called an ambulance. He died at Heartland Regional Medical Center from his dog bite wounds.

Mandrell was about 200 feet away from his home during the Illinois dog attack.

Williamson County Coroner Mike "Junior" Burke reported that although the boy was bitten multiple times, one particular dog bite to a major artery caused the boy to bleed to death. His cause of death has been categorized as accidental.

The family's three dogs were taken to the Williamson County Animal Control Center and will be held during the investigation. No one is sure which dogs - or how many dogs - were involved in the fatal dog attack.

In addition to a police investigation into the child dog mauling, the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services is also investigating the case. It is not the first time that household has been involved with family services.
