Speedway, Indiana Man Has Face Transplant After Car Accident In 2001

Posted on May 16, 2011

A Speedway, Indiana, man is showing his new face to the world for the first time. The man, who was involved in a freak car accident in 2001, has undergone a full face transplant – the fourth such surgery in the nation.

In 2001, the man, now 30-year-old Mitch Hunter, was involved in an Indiana car accident in which a live wire from a telephone pole fell onto his car. When Hunter came into contact with the wire, he was electrocuted. The accident left the war veteran with two fingers amputated, one leg amputated at the knee, and a severely deformed neck and face.

In the years after the car accident, Hunter struggled to fit in despite his deformities. He started a family, but could stand the stares and whispered comments. When he had the opportunity to consider a face transplant, he jumped at the chance despite the risks. In April, he flew to Boston for the operation and several months of recovery. The surgery was successful and he is now waiting as the swelling goes down on his new face. He will have to take medication for the rest of his life to suppress his immune system.

The family of the donor who lost his life and gave up his face to another has decided to remain anonymous, though they did release a statement about the gift that their son was able to give to another.
