St. Omer, Indiana, Pipeline Worker Killed At Construction Site

Posted on Apr 10, 2009

A natural gas pipeline construction site in St. Omer, Indiana, was the location of a construction worker death on Wednesday morning, April 3, according to WISH TV Channel 8.

The construction worker, 46-year-old Randy Gardner, was working on the Rockies Express Pipeline for Sheehan Pipe Line Construction Company in Decatur County. The man was near a backhoe carrying a large wooden construction mat when the backhoe fell onto him. Gardner was taken to an Wishard Hospital in Indianapolis, where he was pronounced dead. He had worked at construction sites for Sheehan for the past two years.

The construction site accident shut down work at the pipeline, which is planned to carry natural gas from Colorado to Ohio.

The construction company told reporters that they train all of their workers in construction site safety, and that there are multiple safety officers who travel between their sites. On the day of the fatal construction accident, however, no safety officer was on site. The construction company also reported that the backhoe was being operated correctly at the time of the accident and did not have mechanical problems.

The last time Sheehan suffered a fatality was in June of 2007, when one of their workers died in a rollover vehicle accident while on the job.

State officials and the Indiana Occupational Safety and Health Administration is investigating the fatal on-the-job accident. The cause of death has not yet been determined by the Marion County Coroner's Office.
