INDIANAPOLIS, Indiana - An evening of summer fun turned tragic on Saturday, leaving dozens of Indiana families searching for answers.
The Indiana State Police reports that five people were killed and an estimated 45 injured when a stage collapsed amid high winds at the Indiana State Fair. The deceased have been identified as:
Alina Bigjohny, 23, of Fort Wayne
Nathan Byrd, 51, of Indianapolis
Glenn Goodrich, 49, of Indianapolis
Christina Santiago, 29, of Chicago, Illinois
Tammy Vandam, 42, of Wanatah
Over the course of the upcoming days, weeks and months, investigators will determine the cause of the accident. And while officials blame sudden and severe weather, several factors undoubtedly contributed.
The actions of Indiana State Fair officials have already come into question. The Indianapolis office of the National Weather Service reportedly issued a severe thunderstorm warning at 8:39 p.m., just minutes before the accident. Across town, at Conner Prairie, an outdoor concert was canceled due to severe weather 30 minutes earlier.
Why did Indiana State Fair officials allow the event to continue under such conditions?
Greenfield-based Mid-America Sound Corporation was responsible for rigging the steel scaffolding around the stage. Surely the company will have to answer for its role in the tragedy.
Meanwhile, life goes on for dozens of injured survivors. Some of the victims have been identified as:
Jenny Haskell, 22, a student at Ball State University
Alisha Marie Brennon, partner of Christina Santiago
Andrea Vallinga, a mother from Pendleton
Three children, including a fifth-grader known only as "Jade"
With heavy hearts, organizers re-opened fair gates at 8 a.m. on Monday after a full-scale shutdown on Sunday. Among the first priorities was a memorial service for the victims.
But for those who lost loved ones in Saturday's tragic accident, life will never be the same. And while nothing can replace their loss, the families affected by this senseless tragedy surely deserve closure.
