Student loses life after being hit by pickup

Robert Raymond Kirby, Jr., a student at the Indiana Math and Science Academy died on November 19, 2008, of injuries he received after being struck by a pickup truck as he was crossing the street. Kirby was walking east on the shoulder of the road about 5:45 a.m. in the 2200 block of East Troy Avenue when he tried to cross the street in the middle of the block. He stepped into the path of an eastbound Chevy S-10 driven by Cesar Gonzalez Florez, 27, and was struck.

Kirby was transported to Wishard Memorial Hospital with a severe head injury and died about 9 a.m.

Authorities say that Gonzalez Florez was issued a summons for operating a vehicle without receiving a license.

It does not appear drugs or alcohol were involved, and Gonzalez Florez was not driving recklessly.
