Teen Killed in Icy I-94 Crash

An 18-year-old Kalamazoo-area woman was killed. She was a rear seat passenger in an SUV that slid off icy eastbound I-94 in Sylvan Township at about 8 p.m., Tuesday, November 6, 2009, and rear-ended a semi-tractor trailer that had pulled off onto the shoulder at Kalmbach Road. The woman was not wearing a seat belt.
Four people were in the SUV, including the 19-year-old male driver, but he and the other two passengers suffered only minor injuries. the tractor-trailer driver, who was not injured, had stopped because the road was icy and he saw several vehicles spinning off the highway.
Troopers said the crash appeared to have been the result of the poor condition of the roads, and driving too fast for conditions.
