Teen killed, two others injured in South Bend car-train collision

Posted on Feb 23, 2009

February 21st 2009--HUDSON LAKE, Ind.

Authorities said icy conditions led to the collision between a car driven by 16-year-old Jimmy Ashcraft and a South Shore commuter train.  Mr. Ashcraft was unable to stop his vehicle in time as it slid down an icy hill near the tracks, and into the path of the commuter train.  A LaPorte County official stated that Mr. Ashcraft died at the scene as a result of his injuries.

The accident also injured 20-year-old Alysia Kominowski and 18-year-old Cole Badzinzki who were passengers in Mr. Ashcraft's vehicle.  Both passengers were taken to Memorial Hospital in South Bend.  Ms. Kominowski was in critical condition and Mr. Badzinzki was reported to be in fair condition.

Authorities say that Mr. Ashcraft's vehicle collided with the second or third car of the commuter train, which was traveling between 50 and 60 mph.  The accident occurred on Saturday arounf 5 p.m. near Hudson Lake.
