Three Semi Trucks Crash In Construction Zone Killing Two In Jasper County

Posted on Aug 23, 2011

A fatal tractor-trailer accident on I-65 outside of Wane, Indiana, left a truck driver and his passenger dead last Wednesday morning.

According to local news reports, the big rig accident took place along Interstate 65 in Jasper County when a truck entering a construction zone failed to slow for traffic. As vehicles slowed to the 45 mile per hour speed limit and merged into a single lane to pass through road work, 59-year-old Dennis Mattern failed to slow and stop with the flow of traffic and slammed into the back of another semi in front of him. In turn, that commercial truck slammed into the big rig in front of it.

Killed in the crash were Mattern and his passenger, 57-year-old Debra Moon, who police believe was in the sleeper area of the cab at the time of the crash. 56-year-old Ryan Giddings, the trucker in the tractor-trailer in front of Mattern was not seriously injured in the accident.

An Indiana State Trooper reported that the construction zone and one-lane merge was well-marked and that just before the crash, a sign clearly posts the 45 mile per hour speed limit. It is unclear why Mattern failed to slow with traffic, and the accident remains under investigation.

I-65 was closed for almost nine hours after the Indiana truck accident.
