Transportation worker dies after I-164 crash

Posted on Mar 25, 2009

An Indiana Department of Transportation employee died Tuesday afternoon, March 24, 2009, from injuries sustained when the truck he was driving was rear-ended by a gravel truck on northbound Interstate 164 near the Morgan Avenue exit.

Mark Shepherdson, 49, of Newburgh, died shortly before 4 p.m. at St. Mary's Medical Center, less than two hours after the wreck just north of the Oak Grove Road overpass.

The wreck occurred when a 2007 Mack dump truck driven by William M. Hurt, 62, of Boonville, Ind., struck Shepherdson's 2002 Sterling dump truck, which was towing a directional arrow board. Shepherdson was directing traffic for an INDOT crew doing shoulder maintenance on I-164. The northbound lane of I-164 had been closed in the area with temporary signs in place south of the work zone, indicating the lane closure and work ahead. Shepherdson's truck, towing the arrow board to alert motorists to move over to the passing lane, was stationary south of the work zone.

The gravel truck, owned by Williams Transport Inc. of Newburgh, overturned, leaving gravel and diesel fuel spilled across the highway, forcing the closure of both northbound lanes of I-164 for more than three hours.

Shepherdson was flown from the scene by helicopter to St. Mary's. Hurt also was transported to St. Mary's for treatment of what state police reported as nonlifethreatening injuries.

Any charges against Hurt will be held until the investigation is completed.
