Indiana State Police closed Interstate 69 South for five hours on Thursday morning after a one-vehicle accident involving hazardous materials took place near the Airport Expressway exit.
According to the Fort Wayne Journal-Gazette, a truck carrying evidence from a methamphetamine lab police-bust ran off of the road and wrecked near the 100 mile marker just south of Fort Wayne. The truck, which was part of a two-vehicle convoy, was owned by Summit Environment Inc., a company that works with the authorities regarding evidence collected from meth lab raids across the state.
At the time of the Indiana truck accident, the trailer was carrying 180 five-gallon barrels of meth-related evidence, many of which spilled into the roadway. Two of the barrels split open during the crash, but police say that the materials were well packed and did not present a danger.
After the crash, all lanes of I-69 south were closed until almost two in the afternoon. For hours after that, the passing lane remained closed as the cleanup continued. The driver of the truck suffered minor injuries in the commercial truck accident.
It is unclear what caused the Fort Wayne truck accident or whether any citations or charges will be issued in connection with the crash.
