Two Amish Children Killed, Four Injured in Indiana SUV and Cart Wreck

Posted on Sep 19, 2011

A horrific collision between a sports utility vehicle and two horse-drawn carts in rural Indiana has left two children dead and four more with serious injuries.

The fatal Indiana traffic accident took place on Labor Day morning on a country road in Middlebury when six children riding in two horse-drawn carts turned out of their driveway onto the street. An approaching SUV was not able to avoid the accident and crashed into the horse and one of the carts.

According to national news sources, 10-year-old Jenna Miller and 7-year-old Jolisa Miller both died in the accident; the older girl died at the scene, and the younger girl died at a nearby hospital after being transported there by helicopter. Ten-year-old Jeneva Miller and four-year-old Jared Miller were both rushed to the hospital in critical condition. Nine-year-old Joyce Miller has been released from the hospital, while another child was treated for a shoulder injury and released. The horse was also killed in the accident.

The Elkhart County Sheriff's Department is investigating the deadly crash. The 60-year-old driver of the SUV was not injured in the crash and was not cited or charged.

The cart accident has many Indiana officials wondering about buggy regulations and how they can prevent similar accidents in the future.

The Indianapolis accident lawyers at Keller & Keller LLP offer our sincere condolences to the families of the children who were lost in this tragic accident.
