Two different but similar serious motorcycle accidents have taken place across Indiana in the past week, according to local Indiana newspapers and reports.
In the first accident, which occurred on November 1, an Anderson, Indiana couple was riding south on a Harley-Davidson on Ind. 13 close to I-69. When an oncoming vehicle blocked the motorcycle from other drivers' views, an SUV turned left onto a ramp and struck the bike almost head on. Both the man and woman on the bike were ejected from their vehicle and critically injured. Neither was wearing a helmet and both were airlifted to Methodist Hospital. The Herald-Bulletin reported that driver of the SUV only suffered minor injuries from her air bag.
In addition to the Madison County Sheriff's Department, the Indiana State Police, Pendleton Police and Fire, Ingalls EMS and Madison County Emergency Management responded to the scene. Madison County Sheriff Ron Richardson would not confirm the identities of the husband and wife, but a separate phone call to the Herald Bulletin sought information about a possible accident involving Anderson attorney Robert Cowles and his wife, Sally. A spokesperson from Methodist Hospital confirmed that the Cowles were in the hospital and in critical condition.
A second crash reported by WSBT.com on November 6, also involved a couple on a motorcycle and a collision with an SUV. In Westville, Ind., LaPorte County Chief Deputy Coroner John Sullivan reported that one of the two vehicles crossed the double yellow centerline on US 421, 20 miles east of Gary, Indiana and north of US 6.
Both victims 20-year-old Jennifer Ray of South Haven Indiana and 33-year-old Alex Esser of Valparaiso Indiana were pronounced dead at the scene, their bodies having been thrown 20 feet into a cornfield from the force of the blow.
