Two injured in motorcycle accident

Posted on Apr 21, 2009

James Partain, 45, Fairland, and Susan Lapack, 51, Indianapolis were rushed to Wishard Memorial Hospital after their motorcycle was hit by a possible drunken driver early Sunday, April 12, 2009, and remain in intensive care.

The pair on the motorcycle collided with a white Chevy pick-up truck driven by Keith Watkins, 39 of Beech Grove, near the Stables nightclub, 6125 Southeastern Ave. and South Arlington shortly after midnight. Watkins fled the scene but was caught about two blocks away, police said.

Watkins was arrested on preliminary charges of failure to stop at an accident and operating while intoxicated.

Partain suffered a head injury and crushed ankle. He was listed in good condition Monday evening. Lapack had a crushed skull and was in critical condition. Dale Gray, a friend of Lapack's, said Partain had been wearing a helmet but Lapack had not.

Police said Watkins told them he had three rum-and-Cokes at a child's birthday party before going to Stables. Police said he refused a blood-alcohol test at the scene but an hour later was taken to a hospital to have blood drawn for a test.
