Veterans will soon have a much better and easier way to apply for VA disability benefits if they have been harmed by Agent Orange while in the line of duty. According to NextGov and iHealth Beat, the United States Department of Veterans Affairs is accepting bids from technology companies for an automated system that would take red tape and guess work out of injured veterans receiving monetary support for their medical conditions.
The automated claims system, which will be the first of its kind in the VA disability benefits process, will examine applications in which former soldiers have suffered from 15 different diseases and conditions stemming from their exposure to the toxic chemical Agent Orange. These diseases include: certain leukemias, Parkinson's disease and ischemic heart disease, acute and subacute peripheral neuropathy, al amyloidosis, chloracne (or similar acneform diseases), chronic lymphocytic leukemia, diabetes mellitus (type 2), hodgkin’s disease, multiple myeloma, non-hodgkin’s lymphoma, porphyria cutanea tarda, prostate cancer, respiratory cancers, and soft tissue sarcoma.
The VA recently changed its list of diseases associated with Agent Orange, a move that they expect will result in an extra 200,000 applications from veterans across the country. They hope that the new automated system will prevent a backlog of claims and help veterans get the support they need as quickly as possible. Last year the VA processed an estimated one million VA disability benefits applications. They are giving contractors two weeks to submit proposals for developing the new automated claims system.
