A new report released by the Government Accountability Office (GAO), “VA Health Care: Actions Needed to Prevent Sexual Assaults and Other Safety Incidents,” has revealed that at least 284 instances of sexual assault, sexual abuse, and rape have been reported in veterans’ hospitals and other related veterans’ facilities across the nation in the last three years alone. The Department of Veterans’ Affairs has responded to the report by stating that they will take immediate steps to protect veterans from these dangers in the future.
While many of the sexual assault victims were veterans themselves, many incidents were never reported to Veteran Affairs because victims were either scared of sharing their story or frightened of losing their veterans disability benefits. Many of these veterans are also still struggling with physical disabilities, trauma, and mental health issues following their service.
Though VA did not go into specifics, they stated that they would work to improve the sexual assault reporting system and make their facilities safer and more secure. They added that they are currently reviewing the detailed recommendations of the GAO outlined in the report.
The veterans themselves, such as the groups Veterans for Veteran Connection Inc. and Operation Firing for Effect, are planning on a trip to Washington, DC, this week in order to speak with lawmakers regarding veterans disability claims, veterans benefits, veteran sexual assaults, and other important veteran issues.
