The Department of Veterans Affairs is getting closer to issuing new rules about which veterans can apply for an receive VA disability benefits for post-traumatic stress disorder.
The new rules put forth that veterans will no longer have to prove that they were in active combat and experienced being shot at or being in danger in order to prove that they suffer from the mental illness so common among soldiers returning from war. Instead, veterans will simply have to prove that they served under stress or experienced trauma while serving. Experts say that the new rule will likely affect thousands upon thousands of veterans – many who served in Iraq, Afghanistan, and even Vietnam.
While many supporters of veterans say that this will be wonderful news for the many, many soldiers who are suffering from PTSD and not getting help, others are more wary, saying that the new rule will inevitably attract cases of fraud – and cost the United States almost $50 billion over the next ten years. In addition, some worry that giving veteran’s disability payments to young soldiers will make them dependent on the government from an early age and may not encourage them to take control of their lives.
Most agree, however, that PTSD is a very serious issue that many men and women suffer from – a condition that affects their everyday lives and hinders every aspect of their lives, including their ability to work. The free mental healthcare that veterans with VA disability benefits could be a life-saving step for many.
