Watermelon Truck Tips Over On I-80 In Gary, Indiana

Posted on Jul 23, 2011

An 18-wheeler filled with 40,000 pounds of watermelons tipped over on Interstate 80 in Gary, Indiana, this week, leaving many wondering just how many tractor-trailers are speeding and carrying insecure loads.

According to local news sources, 37-year-old truck driver Michael Kangas Junior was driving on the northbound I-65 ramp onto I-80 when he lost control of his truck and it rolled over onto its side, closing two lanes of traffic and injuring his passenger, 40-year-old Julia Hall. Hall refused medical treatment at the scene of the big rig accident. It took emergency responders six hours to remove the thousands of watermelons and the tractor-trailer from the road. It is not known how many watermelons were damaged in the crash.

Although Kangas claims that the accident was caused when a passenger car cut off his truck and caused him to swerve, investigators believe that the truck was speeding and that the watermelons it was carrying were not properly loaded into the truck. He was cited both for the poorly loaded truck and for traveling too fast to avoid a collision.

If an 18-wheeler load is not properly packed and secured, the load can shift during travel or cause the truck to topple over when the vehicle suddenly brakes.
