Wayland teen dies from collision with sheriff’s cruiser

Posted on Dec 12, 2008

Evan Dame, 14, of Wayland was killed on Saturday, December 6, when an Allegan County sheriff's cruiser hit another vehicle while responding to a call.

The Sheriff's police cruiser was headed south on 10th Street around 10:40 a.m. with its emergency lights and sirens on, responding to a report of a suicidal man with a gun in the Shelbyville area.  Near 125th Avenue, Deputy David Miller and Reserve Deputy David Quarry encountered three northbound vehicles, two of which slowed and pulled off to the side.  The third vehicle swerved to the right and then came back into the road, crossing the centerline into the cruisers' path.

The cruiser struck the car on its passenger side.

All four teens in the vehicle were taken to Spectrum Health in Grand Rapis.  Brett Dame, 16, who was the driver and brother of the deceased teen, was uninjured.  Ryan Keeney, 17, was checked and released, while Austin Roblyer, 14, was seriously injured

There were blizzard conditions at the time of the crash and police said it was likely the teens' car lost control.

The crash remains under investigation.
