A Michigan man has been charged with two felonies in Wayne County after his two pet pit bulls attacked a woman walking in the neighborhood.
According to Westland Police and the Westland Observer, a 39-year-old was walking on Dorsey Road near the Oceana intersection when she heard barking and growling coming from a house she was passing. Though she walked quickly away from the house, she was soon pursued by two aggressive pit bulls that attacked her. She tried to fight the dogs off and was soon helped by a neighbor and rushed to a nearby hospital. There, she received treatment for her dog bite wounds and 52 stitches on her upper arm.
The owner of the dog, 37-year-old Geoffrey Moore, was arrested and charged with two counts of harboring dangerous animals that caused serious injury, a felony in Michigan. In this Michigan dog bite law, serious injury can either be seen as injury to a human or the fatal injury of another dog. The charges come with a maximum sentence of four years in prison. Moore is currently free on $5,000 bond and expected back in court later this month for his arraignment.
One of the dogs involved in the attack returned to Moore’s home, where police shot and killed the dog after it acted in an aggressive manner toward the officers. The second dog was found on the day after the animal attack. It was caught and transported to the Michigan Human Society, which kept the dog for ten days to screen it for rabies and then put the dangerous animal to sleep.
This is the third dog attack in the recent months that has resulted in felony charges for the dog’s owner.
