Wife Disappears From Fatal Illinois Car Accident Scene

Posted on Dec 09, 2010

A woman has disappeared from the scene of a deadly car accident in Ransom, Illinois, state police say. According to CNN, emergency responders found the woman’s husband dead at the wheel of car and footprints in the snow of the woman leading to a nearby highway.

Friends and relatives say that 40-year-old Tanya Shannon and her husband, 41-year-old Dale Shannon, attended a Christmas party on Saturday night and left the party after midnight with Dale, who was not drinking, behind the wheel. A few hours later, a LaSalle County Sheriff found the scene of a one-car accident with Dale dead behind the wheel and Tanya missing. The car crash took place in a rural area in Brookfield Township.

The car had slid into a pole, and the back of the car was crushed all the way to the back of the two front seats. Footprints led away from the car, but disappeared after a number of yards. Authorities are not sure whether or not Tanya was injured or whether someone may have picked her up. She was wearing a red ball gown and a hooded sweatshirt. Police found her cell phone at the scene of the vehicle accident. Illinois authorities have been searching for the woman for days, along with dozens of family members and volunteers. On Tuesday, the search was called off due to snow and cold.

An autopsy revealed that Dale Shannon died from spinal injuries.

The couple had been married 20 years and had four daughters.
