Winter Weather Causes Dozens Of Serious Traffic Accidents In Indiana

Posted on Jan 25, 2011

Snow and ice has already been held responsible for hundreds of car accidents across Indiana this winter, but last week’s snowstorm in the Muncie, Indiana, area proved to be the most destructive yet. According to Indiana Police, 74 different accidents occurred in the area in a four-hour span on Thursday afternoon, with at least four of the car accidents resulting in serious injuries. Many of the accidents occurred on Interstate 69, where the weather conditions were especially slick and slippery.

Police explained that even an inch or two of snow can turn very slick and icy in a short amount of time, especially on roads where traffic is heavy.

In one accident in I-69 near Lincoln Township, a car rollover accident ended with a passenger ejection and serious injuries. In another Indiana accident, this time on I-74 near Indianapolis, a tractor-trailer slammed into the back of a police cruiser that was parked in the shoulder. The police officer, who was directing traffic in the snowy conditions, was not injured in the accident.

In a third accident, 21-year-old Mackinzie Stuart of Aurora was driving on State Route 48 in Dearborn County when she lost control of her car in the snowy conditions. As her car spun out, she was broadsided by an oncoming car. She was extracted from her vehicle by emergency responders and rushed to a nearby hospital with severe internal injuries including a traumatic brain injury. She later died of her injuries.
