Worker Rescued From Trench After Indianapolis Construction Accident

Posted on Nov 30, 2010

An Indianapolis construction worker received a head injury in an on-the-job accident in Johnson County this week. It took rescue workers about an hour to remove the man from the bottom of a 10-foot trench and transport him to a local hospital for treatment. It is unclear whether or not the worker was wearing a helmet at the time of the accident.

According to local reports, the man fell into the trench and was then struck in the head by another object as workers were constructing a trench for a sewer line near the new foundation for a future nursing home. The Indiana construction accident, which took place near the intersection of State Route 135 and County Line Road outside of Indianapolis, involved the Filson Earthwork construction company out of Noblesville, Indiana.

The Indiana Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) will be investigating the construction work injury, and say that any trench more than six feet deep should have been supported by a trench box or other safety structure. Trench boxes would not only reduce the risk of worker accidents, but would have also made the worker rescue by the White River Township Fire Department faster and easier.

The injured construction worker, who was not identified, was rushed by emergency workers to Methodist Hospital where he is recovering from a traumatic brain injury and where he is listed in stable condition.

Filson Earthwork was last fined for a safety violation by the Indiana OSHA in 2000, when the company paid $18,000 for breaking eight safety regulations.
