Cardura lawsuit

CARDURA
Generic: Doxazosin mesylate
Manufacturer: Pfizer Inc.
Approved uses:  Blood-pressure (alpha blocker)

Serious Side Effects:
Congestive heart failure

Cadura, manufactured by Pfizer, is an antihypertensive that lowers, but doesn’t cure high blood pressure.  It causes blood vessels to relax and expand in order to improve blood flow.  It also makes it easier to urinate by relaxing muscles in the prostate and bladder neck.  Cadura is used to treat prostate gland enlargement in men, and a generic form, Doxazosin, is available.

Side effects of Cadura include dizziness or drowsiness, difficulty breathing, numbness in hands or feet, swelling of legs or ankles, fainting spells, and irregular heartbeat.  Recently, a study conducted by the National Institutes of Health found that those taking Cadura experienced more frequent congestive heart failure than those prescribed a cheaper diuretic.  Internal documents and emails from Pfizer were discovered indicating that the company wasn’t completely truthful about Cardura and avoided emphasis being placed on the NIH study after lawsuit was filed against the company.
