5 injured after vehicles collide on the Indiana Toll Road

ST. JOSEPH COUNTY, IN - A collision on the Indiana Toll Road in St. Joseph County Monday night left five people hospitalized, WSBT reports.

Indiana State Police were called to the scene after the incident occurred in the westbound lanes east of the Notre Dame exit at about 8 p.m.

ISP said the driver of a 2021 Chrysler Pacifica minivan was slowing down to exit the Toll Road when the vehicle was struck from behind by a 2023 International straight truck.  The minivan hit a guardrail on the side of the road before spinning back into the westbound lanes.

One passenger in the minivan, a 25-year-old woman, was ejected from the vehicle and seriously injured.  That person was transported to Memorial Hospital in South Bend for treatment.  The Chrysler driver, a 53-year-old man from the United Kingdom, and three other passengers sustained minor injuries and were taken to the same hospital.  The driver of the truck, a 47-year-old Nebraska man, was not injured.

Neither drugs nor alcohol are believed to have been contributing factors in the crash, according to investigators.

Westbound traffic on the Toll Road was blocked for about an hour for the accident response and investigation.
