Crossing guard hit by vehicle near elementary school in Kalamazoo

KALAMAZOO, MI - An accident near a Kalamazoo school on Monday afternoon left a crossing guard injured, according to a WOOD report. 

Kalamazoo Public Safety officials said the guard was struck by a vehicle outside Milwood Elementary School on Lovers Lane as students were being dismissed at about 4 p.m.  He was taken to Ascension Borgess Hospital. to undergo surgery for two broken bones in his leg.

No details were immediately released about the driver or vehicle involved.  Road safety has been an issue in the area in the past, the school said.  “Over the past 5 years, we have raised our concerns with the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety about this stretch of road. We are hoping that a successful solution can be found to help ensure safety to our Students and community,” Milwood Elementary said on Facebook.

The post added, "It is extremely important that vehicles driving on Lovers Lane slow down and are aware of our Students, Families, and Crossing Guards."
