Driver killed when SUV crashes into tree in Antwerp Township

ANTWERP, MI - Investigators are trying to determine the cause of a fatal SUV accident in Van Buren County last Thursday, MLive.com reports.

According to the Van Buren County Sheriff's Office, a man was driving a Lincoln Navigator east on 62nd Avenue in Antwerp Township when the incident happened at about 7 p.m. The driver was unable to negotiate a curve in the roadway near 30th Street and crashed into a tree head-on.

The driver, a 60-year-old man from Mattawan, was found unresponsive in the vehicle and was pronounced dead at the scene.  His name was not released.  The victim was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash.

Authorities believe speed and alcohol were contributing factors in the fatal wreck, which shut down 62nd Avenue until the tree could be removed.
