Unlike previous shutdowns, Social Security Administration employees will continue to work and offices will remain open. Though there are many problems being caused by the shutdown, “essential services” such as public safety operations and Medicare remain up and running. Additionally, all three programs are considered mandatory spending and are therefore not affected by the federal budget debate over the wall. However, new applicants should be aware that they may experience delays in processing.
