Lasik eye surgery can greatly improve your quality of life and, miraculously, improve your vision in ways we could not have imagined just a few decades ago. However, although the procedure is an outpatient operation, the delicate surgery should be done by a specialized, skilled doctor.
This was certainly not the case with Dr. Nicholas Caro, a Chicago doctor who was sued over 50 times in the past decade for a variety of medical mistakes, inappropriate behavior, and gross negligence. Finally, after all of these blatant cases of medical malpractice over ten years, the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation has suspended his medical license for a month and barred him from performing any sort of eye surgery ever again. In addition, he will be put on probation for three years.
However, the slow and seemingly lenient actions have made many in Illinois wonder about the state agency’s actions toward medical professionals with a long history of medical malpractice and medical negligence. Most doctors are sued one or twice in their careers – no other doctor in Chicago has anywhere near the number of malpractice cases as Caro did. Among the complaints listed, patients say that Caro botched their eye surgeries and did not follow up when presented with serious complications. A number of his patients have permanently damaged vision due to his poor Lasik eye surgeries.
Caro may continue to practice after this month, but only under the supervision of a licensed physician.
