An Indiana family is threatening to a dog bite lawsuit after their six-year-old boy was attacked by a pit bull mix at the Hamilton County Humane Society. At the same time, the Indiana animal shelter has closed its doors to add extra safety features to the venue to make sure another dog bite incident does not take place in the future.
Hamilton County Animal Control Officer Tom Rogers explained that the dog had been injured and was in a closed room. The door to the room was covered in paper and had a sign telling visitors not to enter. The boy, Zachary Handzel, opened the door and was badly bit by the dog on his arm, leg, and face. He has received 50 stitches from a plastic surgeon and could require more medical attention in the future.
According to witnesses, the animal bit the child in the cheek and then followed the boy back into the lobby where it continued to attack the boy’s limbs. Finally, a bystander kicked the dog off the Indiana dog bite victim. The dog did not have a history of violence or aggression and had lived in a home with children and other pets in the past.
The day following the dog attack, the Hamilton County Humane Society added deadbolts to the doors of many of the animal rooms, placing the locks above a child’s reach. The animal shelter also added clips to dozens of animal cages in an attempt to prevent tampering with the animals. The same animal shelter is facing a dog bite lawsuit after an Akita bit a visitor last year.
