Michigan Man Charged With Two Counts After Dog Mauls Boy

Posted on Jan 24, 2010

What are the consequences of being a negligent dog owner? In some cases, more than the dog suffers from owner neglect. In fact, letting your dog run loose and not licensing your dog can put you in trouble with the law – and lead to serious injuries for others.

This was the case in Harbor Beach, Michigan, when a man let his unlicensed dog roam freely in the neighborhood. Michigan State Police say that the dog attacked a Sherman Township toddler in the summer of 2009. The two-year-old boy, Luke Volmering, was feeding his own dog in his yard when a stray mutt approached the boy and attacked him. The next day when the dog returned to the yard once again displaying aggressive behavior, Volmering’s father Richard shot the dog.

The boy was rushed to Harbor Beach Community Hospital and then transported to Children’s Hospital in Detroit for more specialized medical care related to his dog bites. The specifics of the young boy’s serious injuries are not known, though reports say the boy sustained serious bites to head, face, and eyes during the dog attack.

The dog’s owner, 37-year-old Randy Weiss has been charged with misdemeanor charges of having an unlicensed dog and stray dog. He will appear in court again regarding the dog attack case on February 11 in Bad Axe.

The Huron County Health Department examined the dog’s body and found that it did not have rabies. The dog was a 6-year-old German shepherd and Labrador retriever mix.
