A large percentage of Americans are concerned about their weight, and for years companies have taken advantage of consumers by offering "all-natural" products that claim to be the solution to weight gain. Hydroxycut, manufactured by Iovate Health Sciences, Inc., have been the most popular of these weight-loss supplements on the market for several years. However, on May 1, the Food & Drug Administration issued a serious warning about the dangers of taking any of the company's 14 Hydroxycut products.
Made with a mix of caffeine, herbal extracts, green tea, and other stimulants, Hydroxycut promised to boost energy, suppress appetite, help with low-carb diets, burn fat, and aid weight loss. However, now 23 cases have confirmed that the product can cause liver damage, jaundice, heart problems, and even liver failure. In one case, an otherwise healthy 19-year-old died after using the product.
"The FDA urges consumers to discontinue use of Hydroxycut products in order to avoid any undue risk. Adverse events are rare, but exist. Consumers should consult a physician or other health care professional if they are experiencing symptoms possibly associated with these products," said Linda Katz, M.D., interim chief medical officer of the FDA's Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition.
Although the FDA itself has not recalled the Hydroxycut products, the company that makes the pills and drinks has volunteered to hold its own recall in an attempt to prevent further lawsuits. However, several state are already filing class action suits against the company.
The FDA announced it will continue its investigation of the products, which include:

Hydroxycut Caffeine-Free Rapid Release Caplets

Hydroxycut Max Liquid Caplets
