Xarelto is a prescription blood thinner used to treat and prevent blood clots. It has been found to lower the chances of stroke and prevent deep vein thrombosis (DVT).
What Are the Dangers of Taking Xarelto?
Though the FDA approved Xarelto for the specific uses listed above, the drug does carry a serious black box warning for increased risk of blood clots if the user stops taking the drug prematurely. There is also a risk of epidural or spinal hematomas that can result in paralysis of patients using Xarelto while receiving neuraxial anesthesia or undergoing spinal puncture. Another serious risk that may be caused by the use of Xarelto is stomach bleeding especially if alcohol is used while prescribed to this medication.
