16 injured when day care van crashes on east side of Indianapolis

INDIANAPOLIS, IN - A collision between a day care van and an SUV in Indianapolis sent 16 people to the hospital on Friday afternoon, WRTV reports.

Police and first responders were called to the scene on Washington Street near Washington Pointe Drive on the city's east side.  According to investigators, the driver of a Chevrolet Traverse was trying to turn left into a store parking lot at about 3:10 p.m. and crashed into a Ford van that was going west on Washington Street.  The van was carrying children on their way back to the Bright Minds Academy day care facility in Cumberland.

Two women and 13 children ranging from 10-months-old to 9-years-old were inside the van.  One man was in the Chevy Traverse.  All were taken to the hospital with minor injuries and were reported to be in good condition.

Everyone in the two vehicles was wearing seat belts or was in a car seat, the Indianapolis Fire Department said.  Police are continuing to investigate the cause of the crash.
