18 injured in accident involving nearly two dozen vehicles on I-25

SANDOVAL COUNTY, NM - Authorities said a crash involving 23 vehicles closed a stretch of Interstate 25 north in Sandoval County on Wednesday afternoon.

According to the Rio Rancho Observer, the wreck took place in the area of mile marker 254 on the interstate, north of San Felipe Pueblo and Algodones.  18 people were taken to area hospitals with varying degrees of injuries.

New Mexico State Police, the Sandoval County Sheriff's Office, and the Sandoval County Fire Department responded to the scene.  I-25 north was cloed down for several hours while the injured were being evaluated and vehicles were being removed.

Investigators believe a combination of dust, hail, and lightning contributed to the accident.
