2 dead, 1 critically injured in separate accidents in Albuquerque

ALBUQUERQUE, NM - Two people died and a third was injured during three separate crashes that occurred in Albuquerque earlier this week, police told the Albuquerque Journal.

The first collision took place in the area of La Bajada Road and Atrisco Drive NW Tuesday at about 6:35 p.m.  An investigation determined that 27-year-old Alan Castanon of Albuquerque was speeding while going south on Atrisco Drive and crashed into the driver's side of a vehicle that was about to make a turn onto Tower Road.  The driver of the vehicle that was hit, a 17-year-old male, was taken to an area hospital in critical condition.

Castanon was arrested and charged with DWI, great bodily harm by vehicle, reckless driving and assault.

Later that night at 10:30 p.m., the driver of a Nissan was going at a high rate of speed on 98th Street and struck the passenger side of a Mitsubishi.  The Mitsubishi flipped across the intersection and struck a light post.  A 28-year-old man believed to have caused the wreck was killed, while the Mitsubishi driver suffered minor injuries.

The third incident occurred in the area of 4th Street NW and Candelaria Road NW Wednesday morning at about 1 a.m.  Police said 24-year-old Bryson Kayonnie of Albuquerque was driving west on Candelaria when he T-boned a vehicle going south, killing the other driver.

Kayonnie, who reportedly told police he had been drinking prior to the wreck, was charged with vehicular homicide and was taken to the Metropolitan Detention Center.
