5th victim dies from injuries suffered in Rio Rancho collision

RIO RANCHO, NM - A fifth person has now died as the result of a head-on collision that occurred in Rio Rancho earlier this month, police said.

The Rio Rancho Observer reports that 46-year-old Francisco Paredes passed away from injuries suffered in the Nov. 13 wreck.   Paredes was driving a 2001 Toyota Sequoia when he crashed into a 2023 Nissan Pathfinder driven by 36-year-old Craig Miller.

The incident happened near the intersection of King Boulevard and Sheba Drive at about 5:30 p.m., and caused both vehicles to catch fire.  A police report indicated the Nissan had swerved left prior to the collision, leading up to the area of impact.

Miller and his 11-month-old daughter died at the scene.  His 6-year-old son and the family's unborn baby died at University of New Mexico Hospital.  Miller's wife and two other sons, ages 4 and 8, suffered significant injuries but were in stable condition.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation by police, who noted both vehicles drove left of center with "other visual obstruction(s)".
