CARMEL, IN - An accident shut down a bridge over Interstate 465 in Carmel on Thursday afternoon, the Indiana Department of Transportation said.
In a post on X at 4:36 p.m., INDOT East Central said an oversized load struck the Spring Mill Road bridge over the I-465 westbound lanes. The road was closed until the bridge can be deemed safe to drive across. The beams of the span were inspected following the collision.
Carmel police later released an update saying that I-465 westbound had reopened but Spring Mill Road remained closed awaiting the INDOT inspection. The Carmel Fire Department said crews were also cleaning up a large fuel spill resulting from the crash.
