INDIANAPOLIS, IN - A bicyclist was killed in a collision with an Indianapolis police vehicle on Monday afternoon, reports the Indianapolis Star.
The incident took place in the 3400 block of East 10th Street near North LaSalle Street on the city's east side at about 2:15 p.m. A police officer was responding to reports of a home invasion and had his lights and siren on. Investigators said the officer was approaching North LaSalle Street when he attempted to avoid a collision with a vehicle making a turn in front of him and collided head-on with a man riding a bicycle westbound.
The officer got out of the car to help the victim until paramedics got to the scene. The bicyclist was taken to an area hospital and was pronounced dead later in the afternoon. He was identified as 34-year-old Joseph Rudolph Stiger.
The officer was taken to the hospital for a blood draw as required by police policy and state law. The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department is continuing to investigate the incident.
