Child killed when semi crashes into disabled van on Interstate 70

INDIANAPOLIS, IN - A crash on Interstate 70 in Indianapolis Thursday evening left a child dead and four other people injured, Indiana State Police said.

According to WTHR, a van became disabled in the eastbound lanes of I-70 at about 8:30 p.m., possibly because of a flat tire.  A semi tractor-trailer then collided with the rear of the van, which had two adults and three children inside.

One of the children, a 7-year-old girl, died after being taken to an area hospital.  The four other injured victims were in stable condition.

Police said there was not enough room on the shoulder of the interstate in that area for the van to have safely pulled over.  The left lanes of eastbound I-70 were shut down for about five hours for the accident investigation, which is ongoing.

Investigators do not believe drugs or alcohol were contributing factors.
