Collision on New Mexico Highway 11 in Luna County kills infant

LUNA COUNTY, NM - New Mexico State Police released information regarding a vehicle crash in Luna County that killed an infant earlier this month.

According to the Deming Headlight, the incident occurred Nov. 11 at the intersection of New Mexico Highway 11 and Voories Road.  State police said a Luna County Sheriff's Office vehicle was heading to the scene of a reported burglary in progress shortly before noon with its emergency lights and siren activated.  The driver of a 2012 Nissan Altima tried to make a left turn in front of the sheriff's vehicle, and the two collided.

An infant buckled into a car seat in the Nissan was pronounced dead after being taken to an area hospital.  The driver of the Nissan was hospitalized with injuries that were not life-threatening.  Two deputies were seen at the hospital and released.

The accident remains under investigation by the NMSP.
