Driver injured when car rear-ends semi on I-70 in Indianapolis

INDIANAPOLIS, IN - First responders were called to the scene of a collision on Interstate 70 in Indianapolis early Sunday morning, WISH reports.

The incident occurred along the interstate on the city's near east side near Olney Street.  Investigators said the driver of an Amazon semi-trailer was traveling eastbound when the truck was rear-ended by a passenger vehicle at about 4:17 a.m.

The 23-year-old driver of the second vehicle became trapped underneath the trailer and had to be extricated by rescue crews.  He was hospitalized in critical condition but was later upgraded to serious condition.

The 37-year-old truck driver, who pulled over after the accident, was not seriously hurt.

The two right lanes of I-70 were shut down while the wreckage was being cleared from the scene.
