Indiana state trooper injured after being struck by vehicle on I-65

INDIANAPOLIS, IN - An accident near downtown Indianapolis Saturday night sent an Indiana state trooper to the hospital, WISH reports.

The incident occurred on Interstate 65 south near 30th Street and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Street.  State Police said Trooper Azariah Keith had stopped to help a pedestrian change a flat tire at about 8:45 p.m. and was putting his equipment back in his vehicle.

At that point, investigators said the driver of a 2018 Chevy Equinoix approached the scene at high speed and lost control of the car.  The Equinox struck the concrete median, hit Keith and then collided with Keith's police car. Keith was transported to Eskenazi Hospital, where he was listed in critical condition but was expected to recover.

The Equinox driver, identified as 22-year-old Armaandeep Singh of Indianapolis, was arrested following the crash.  He faced a preliminary charge of driving while intoxicated and causing serious bodily injury, and was taken to the Marion County jail.

The southbound lanes of I-65 were closed for about three hours while the ISP was investigating.
