Man, 83, fatally struck by van in front of his Whitley County home

WHITLEY COUNTY, IN - Authorities said an elderly man died after being struck by a vehicle in front of his home in Whitley County May 17, WXIN reports.

The victim was identified as 83-year-old Carl W. Moehle of Roanoke.  An initial investigation found that Moehle was standing in the roadway of his residence on State Road 114 shortly after 6:30 p.m. and was picking up trash in the road.  The driver of a 2009 Chrysler van coming over a nearby hill reportedly tried to take evasive action but was unable to avoid hitting Moehle, with the impact sending him into a ditch.  He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Indiana State Police responded to the scene and are continuing to investigate the accident.  The van driver cooperated with investigators and his blood was drawn, which is standard procedure in Indiana when serious crashes occur.
