Man charged in accident that killed bicycle rider in Carlsbad

CARLSBAD, NM - A man has been charged in connection with the death of a bicyclist in Carlsbad last month, reports the Carlsbad Current-Argus.

18-year-old Isiah Grijalva of Loving was arrested for the May 27th incident.  According to investigators, Grijalva was driving a Mustang in the 1200 block of West Church Street sometime before 10 p.m. when he struck the bicycle rider.

The victim, 63-year-old David MacLaskey, was pronounced dead after being taken to Carlsbad Medical Center.

Grijalva allegedly left the scene of the crash but returned later and was subsequently taken into custody. Carlsbad police said a test showed his blood alcohol content was over the legal limit.

Grivalja is facing multiple charges, including homicide by vehicle, leaving the scene of an accident resulting in great bodily harm or death, and tampering with evidence.  Police said he was driving with a revoked license.
