LAFAYETTE, IN - One person was killed and another was arrested following a deadly car accident in Tippecanoe County on Sunday morning, according to a report by WISH.
Indiana State Police said the driver of a Jeep was headed north on Interstate 65 at about 3:30 a.m. when the vehicle ran off the east side of the road near the 170 mile marker. The driver then overcorrected and the Jeep went back across I-65, where it crashed through a guardrail in the median and caught fire.
A passenger in the vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene. ISP said the driver fled on foot but was later taken into custody near the interstate.
The driver, identified as 35-year-old Max Vanegas of Indianapolis, was suspected of having been driving under the influence.
He was preliminarily charged on multiple counts, including operating a vehicle while intoxicated causing death, and leaving the scene of a fatal crash.
