Man facing charges after crashing into South Bend police car

SOUTH BEND, IN -  Police arrested a driver who collided with a South Bend police vehicle early Saturday morning, WNDU reports.

38-year-old Wilson Makori Jr. is facing charges in connection with the incident that occurred on Portage Avenue near Leland Avenue.  The South Bend Police Department said he was driving a Chevrolet Malibu when he went through a stop sign at Leland Avenue at about 3:15 a.m. and crashed into the patrol vehicle.

Makori's car became lodged in a snowbank and after trying to drive away multiple times he was removed from the vehicle, according to police.  Officers said he appeared to be impaired, and they also found a stolen handgun in the Malibu.

Makori was charged on multiple counts, including resisting law enforcement, operating a vehicle while intoxicated endangering a person, and operating a vehicle as a habitual traffic violator.  He pleaded not guilty at an initial hearing. There were no serious injuries in the crash.
