LAS CRUCES, NM - A man has been sentenced to prison after being convicted for his role in a fatal crash in Dona Ana County in January, KVIA reports.
38-year-old Patrick Woods of El Paso was found guilty on multiple charges in connection with the wreck that occurred on Highway 213 in Chaparral. He was ordered to serve 12 years in prison.
According to investigators, Woods was driving a Jeep recklessly and at a high rate of speed when he lost control of the vehicle, crossed into oncoming traffic, and struck two vehicles in the opposite lanes.
A man and a woman in one of the other vehicles, a Toyota Scion, were pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities said Woods fled the scene on foot after the crash before being later apprehended. Open containers of alcohol were found in the Jeep.
Woods was convicted on charges that included homicide by vehicle, leaving the scene, resisting or evading arrest and having open containers of alcohol. Our Albuquerque car accident lawyer team will provide any updates via this news blog as they are made publicly available.
